EnglishPod 0002 — Calling In Sick

1. Listening

2. Speaking

Echo

Shadowing

Shadowing x 1,

3. Bidirectional Translation

从 §5 Useful Expression 挑几句(如 I'm coming down with…take the day off)。

4. Transcript

Hello, Daniel speaking. How may I help you?
Hi Daniel. Julie here.
Oh, hi Julie. How are you?
Actually, I'm feeling quite ill today.
Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. What's wrong?
I think I'm coming down with the flu.
I have a headache, a sore throat, a runny nose and I'm feeling slightly feverish.
I see. So, you're calling in sick.
Yes. I was hoping to take the day off to recover.
Okay then. Try and get some rest.

5. Useful Expression

Patterns worth carrying into your own speech (review after practice):

  • How may I help you?
Polite offer of help (common on the phone or at a front desk).
e.g. Hello, Daniel speaking. How may I help you? (from the transcript)
Good morning — how may I help you today?
Hi, this is the front desk. How may I help you?

  • I'm coming down with…
Starting to feel sick; often used before you are fully ill (a cold, the flu, etc.).
e.g. I think I'm coming down with the flu. (from the transcript)
I might be coming down with a cold — my throat hurts.
She's coming down with something; she should stay home.

  • I see.
Soft acknowledgment that you follow what someone just explained ("Ah, that makes sense"). Unlike (I) got it / (I) get it, which often confirm a fact or instruction ("OK, understood — I'll do that"), I see is more reflective and situational, not usually a "message received / task clear" reply.
e.g. I see. So, you're calling in sick. (from the transcript)
I see — so the meeting was moved to Friday.
Ah, I see. That explains why she left early.

  • you're calling in sick
Phone (or message) a workplace to say you won't come in because you're ill.
e.g. So, you're calling in sick. (from the transcript)
I hate calling in sick, but I really can't work today.
Three people called in sick this morning.

  • I was hoping to…
Soft way to ask for or suggest something you want (polite, less pushy than I want…).
e.g. Yes. I was hoping to take the day off to recover. (from the transcript)
I was hoping to leave a bit early today.
We were hoping to finish this before Friday.

  • take the day off
Not go to work (or school) for that day — for rest, illness, or personal reasons.
e.g. Yes. I was hoping to take the day off to recover. (from the transcript)
I'm taking the day off — I need a break.
Can I take Friday off for a doctor's appointment?
